These gender-specific education choices obviously influence the places men and women occupy in the labour market after their studies (see below). However, the so-called ‘adjustment rate’ between the disciplinary field of study and the sector of the labour market varies considerably between countries and between disciplines: The frequency of discrepancies changes from one field of studies to the next. Young people who have followed a vocational degree course in the Humanities, agriculture or the ‘hard’ sciences are more likely to be employed outside their disciplinary field.

The proportion of couples in which both partners work is less high among households with children than among those without children in six member states. The most substantial differences are recorded in Ireland (-10%), Germany (-10%) and the United Kingdom (-9%).
