By isolation, prayer, meditation, and fasting, he strove to save and satisfy his soul. After a time he knew something was missing. One night on his knees an insight came to himhis life of solitude was selfish and not selfless. Telemachus decided if he was going to serve God he must serve people. Leaving his desert haunts, he returned to Rome, the capital of the world. To his surprise Christianity had become the official religion. Christians no longer hid in tombs to worship. Everything seemed changed except for one thing.

The king longed to improve the level of living for his people and to promote great happiness in the homes of the land. In the letter the king offered special benefits to each subject. There was one condition. To collect the benefits, each person needed to appear at the nearest village square on the day the king's representative came to the village. All the benefits the king promised would be received only through a personal appearance before the king's representative. Likewise all the benefits and blessings God has for us come through his Holy Spirit.

To discern the fruit of the Spirit in its true dimension is to see that the production of fruit is no less a miraculous work of the Spirit than is the performance of some gift of the Spirit. And though the fruit may seem less spectacular than the gifts, it is as supernatural and striking a witness of what God, through his Spirit, can do in the life of one led by him. If Christianity is to be radiant and relevant, equal stress must be put on the fruit and gifts of the Spirit. For unless the fruit of love, joy, peace, and the other fruit characterize our lives, Christianity can claim very little that is unique from any other faith.
