1. These sensors are used for real-time humidity and temperature threshold sensing. 3 presents detailed theory of various types of passive components considered in this book. Later, this section presents the theory of operation for two types of chipless RFID sensor developed in this book. 1 presents circuit layout for various passive microwave components and integrated sensor. It shows generic design guideline for realizing a fully passive, planar, backscatterer-based chipless RFID sensor. It also describes the fabrication method of microwave components.

These sensors have different features and applications, which are discussed in the following sections. 1 Active RFID Sensors Active sensors are a subclass of sensors that use batteries to power their communication circuitry, microcontroller, and sensor. These sensor tags operate over a wide range and can achieve high data rates. However, the power supply required in the tag circuitry increases device complexity, cost, and weight. 1, the basic block diagram of an active RFID sensor tag is shown [6].

Bhattacharyya et al. [18, 19] have developed a prototype passive RFID sensor for monitoring the change in temperature or other environmental effects. The sensors use the variation of reader threshold transmitted power and tag backscatter power to quantify sensing parameters. There has been significant research on the development of an RFID sensor platform in flexible substrates [20–22]. Although these fully passive sensors can be used without a battery, the IC used in the tag circuit introduces a cost overhead.
