The outer layer represents the operational level of the school. This is what one sees on walking around the school building on a given day: teachers in front of their classrooms explaining something on the blackboard; students struggling to enact the curriculum; students moving from one classroom to another, banging locker doors, calling out to one another; assistant principals standing in the corridors scowling at the students as they pass by; bulletin boards displaying students’ work; bells ringing; announcements coming over the PA system reminding students and teachers about the days events; teachers discussing new textbooks; and so forth.

Those myths—often embodied in story, poetry, highly symbolic literature, sacred texts—shape people’s convictions, beliefs, and attitudes about most things. It is in that core of myth, meaning, and belief that leaders find the foundation for their vision of what the school can and should become: the greenhouse for cultivating the educated person. The leader’s work is not completed when the school community has articulated its communal vision. The vision must become embodied in the other layers of the school organization.

How can the world community take responsibility for the fragile ecosystem of the earth? How do we honor cultural differences in a crowded world that has shrunk in space and time? How do we settle conflicts in nonviolent ways? Although we cannot turn the fourth grade into a year-long discussion of the United Nations’ agenda, we need to find ways to link what we learn in school to the weighty questions facing humanity. Nationally, there are ongoing debates about resource allocation for public health, education, child and family services, affordable housing, national defense, space exploration, development of alternative sources of energy, nuclear waste disposal, law enforcement, and affirmative action for underrepresented communities.
