Given the moral style which McGuffey chose to use, it is not at all surprising that he also should have chosen selections by his fellow Presbyterian minister, Lyman Beecher. In the twentieth century it might seem strange to place Beecher with Shakespeare and Longfellow or Noah Webster or Henry Clay. Yet in his own day it made perfect sense. But Mann, and many other nonevangelicals, did play an important part in developing popular acceptance of the common school idea.
