To add to her anxiety, she is both surprised and concerned that ‘nobody really bothers to find out if you’re keeping up’. Furthermore, the pace of university mathematics is beginning to speed up. At school, the delivery had been ‘slower and you had time to understand each step’. Tracy is a loner; she sits apart from her peers during lectures and wanders around on her own between teaching sessions.

Traditional choosers, for whom going to university is part of a normalized process of ‘what you do’, are in a privileged position. Their social and cultural capital are in good supply, and for them, participation in higher education is part of a broader set of longterm expectations and assumptions about their place in the world. Those who ‘choose’ or ‘select’ a traditional high-status university may well buy into discourses of elitism—where only a ‘good’ university would ever be seen as a viable prospect (Bourdieu and Passeron, 1990).

Now they are on their own. For newcomers like Raj, the pressures of coping on their own can sometimes be exacerbated by needing to satisfy a wider community. Perhaps the social and cultural capital newcomers like Tracy and Raj have brought with them have been exhausted. They are at a point where they are gaining a different set of understandings but, as yet, they are teetering on the edge, hanging on, not fully able to manage in this novel setting. They are perhaps in, but not of, the university.
