The town was known first as Wolf Hills, named by Daniel Boone whose hunting camp here was attacked by wolves from the caves underlying the town. Today, the Cave House Craft Shop’s Wolf Cave building is believed to be the location of the site of the wolves’ den. Many Indian attacks took place in the area, so forts were built along the rivers for protection. In 1774, Joseph Black built Black’s Fort near Abingdon. The fort was large enough to hold 600 people. Black’s Fort was named the county seat of Washington County until the town of Abingdon was incorporated in 1778.
